My goal for this Assignment was to make a table using a 2ft or bigger top and incorporate hockey sticks for the legs. I got my tree from a friend of mines farm. It was over 5 feet in diameter but because of our tiny chainsaw we could only get just over 2 feet of usable lumber. The majority of my time on this project was getting my top to be flat using the CNC router in the innovation center. Immediately we ran into issues getting my wood to fit in the machine. It was too big so we had to use the hand planer to shave a couple fractions of an inch off so we could squeeze it under the router tip. To secure it into place we used 4 strips of wood screwed in to the table on all sides to keep the wood from wiggling around. With about 6 runs of the G code on the first side and 4 on the second we finally acheived flat.

Once my wood was flat it was time for the finishing process. The first step was squaring up my project so it could properly fit in a corner. I used a right angle to draw the line where I wanted my wood cut and I followed it with my skill saw. It was super close but to make sure I had it perfect we created a sled on the table saw and cut both edges one more time.
The CNC router got my project flat but it left marks every time it went over my wood. In every other row it was light and dark kind of like when you mow your lawn. To fix this I put my wood through the belt sander multiple times and put finishing touches with the orbital sander. The only thing left to do with my top was to finish it. I used an Amber Shellac to give my wood a unique look. While doing so I put masking tape around the perimeter of the top for my first couple coats to keep as much of the Shellac up there as possible so I could get some depth in my finish. I did 5 coats with the paint brush, sanding between each one. Then I did one final coat with the sprayer. |
I created the legs by using an old 2x10 that I found in a dumpster and broken hockey sticks that were going to wind up in the garbage. I cut 6 strips, 1 3/16 inch strips out of the 2x10. I then put those strips on their side and cut them 1 3/16 the other way so they were a perfect square. I cut four of them to length (26 inches) to use as my legs and I used the other two as perpendicular supports. I connected everything with pocket screws and glue.
To add the hockey sticks, I took all 8 that I had and cut theme right down the middle hot dog way using the table saw. I then fitted them to length and screwed them in to all sides of my table. |
